Influence of Parents educational attainment and socioeconomic status on students’ academic performance

Khan & Iqbal (2015) found a significant relationship between parents level of education and students’ academic performance. There are a number of possible reasons why parents’ educational attainment and socioeconomic status positively affect students’ academic performance:

a. Parents serve as role model for children to emulate. Children are motivated intrinsically to attain higher heights just as their parents.

b. Parents support children with their homework and assignments. Educated parents directly support children to do their homework and assignments.

c. Parent’s educational attainment and socioeconomic status are associated to a large with level of income and employment. Educated parents may therefore be able to support children with learning materials and learning needs.

d. The level of education and socioeconomic status of parents enable them to follow up with feedback from students’ performance. Educated parents are able to follow children’s reports from school by communicating with school on ways the students’ performance could be improved.

e. Interest level of parents in children education may depend on their educational attainment and socioeconomic status.
