Improving Educational Quality through Reflective Dialogues: Reflections from a Paradigmatic Transformative 2-Day Workshop

Last week, I had the unique opportunity to participate in a very productive and intensive workshop which lasted over two days where we reappraised the internal assessment, and transcript system workings. It was held in the Volta Serene Hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday and this place stood as a very silent ambience with great facility where people could meet and discuss important action plans.

Taking a reflection of my title as the Acting Deputy Director General, for Quality and Access to Education (GES), I would say as an understatement that there was a lot that came to our attention. I envisaged that the workshop came with much enlightenment and motivation. The sessions accommodated a wide range of educationists and local policymakers who were invited to evoke both a technical discourse and intellectual exchange on how we can strengthen our existing frameworks for student assessment and academic record keeping.”

The workshop provided a space for concrete and insightful dialogue as we pried into current practices and innovate ways that promote transparency, accuracy, and effectiveness in assessment and document keeping. More importantly, the environment developed a culture of open-mindedness among participants and encouraged a shared commitment for dedication to excellence in the provision of education.

Reiterating the velocity of this dialogue at our respective workplaces, it is imperative to note that one very significant issue is the need for a data-driven assessment which not just measures academic performance, but brings so much insight that goes beyond just performance to know how far a student has progressed in taking their learning into new realms. By refined adjustments in our internal systems, we are trying to make decisions more informed at all levels from the classroom, teaching, and policy formulation.

Two days of very intense and efficient work in Volta Serene have left me completely ecstatic about the energy, the commitment and the futures orientation of everybody. For sure, the next steps in our services to the nation will be informed by these two days. The insights that I’ve gathered from the last two days of the workshop will surely live with me as we progress in our mission to ensure quality education for everyone in Ghana.

With every moving step, I am committed to tireless leadership that thinks accountability and invested energy. Together, we are establishing the base very strong, not just for excellence but also inclusiveness that is expected in a bright future of education.
